Jeep EV: Have Your Green and SUV, Too
If you’re an SUV fan, there’s a good chance you’re feeling under siege at the moment. Roller coaster gas prices affect your gas-guzzling segment the most. Environmentally conscious bikers and guys in Priuses look at you with disdain. Yet you’re not the type to trade in an Expedition for a Smart Car. Tesla has been promising an electric SUV for years, but now Chrysler, yes, Chrysler, in a surprise move, is releasing the world’s first ever production-ready electric SUV – and what an SUV.
The Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 4×4 is regarded by many as the king of rock climbing SUVs, and now easily the most fuel efficient as well. That is the promise of the 2010 Jeep EV. Rocking a hybrid electric and petrol system, the Jeep EV can take you around town up to 40 miles on pure electric power, recharged on a normal home outlet. After 40 miles, it switches to its 8 gallon gas tank. Combined, you can go up to an astonishing 400 miles without stopping.
While Jeep Wranglers still have a rough ride compared to similar car-based SUVs, the Jeep EV is light years ahead of its ancestors (well prior to their major refresh in ’07) with stability control, side airbags, and other amenities built in. You still won’t get leather seating as an option, you can however, get a winch system to pull you out of the mud. Jeeps aren’t made for those seeking a luxury SUV, but for real adventurers who aim to climb rocks, ride through rivers and pull themselves out of quicksand. In the past this meant sacrificing ride quality and fuel efficiency. With the 2010 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited EV, we can’t guarantee you’ll have the smoothest ride, but you’ll most certainly have the most fuel efficient truck on the road.
